Single-Protein Cat Food: Vet Recommendations on Allergies, IBD and Sensitivities

Share Facebook X Email

As a vet with 27 years experience, I’ve often been frustrated by the lack of high-quality, single protein diet options for cats. CatChi has changed that,  a food made with real, fresh Australian meat and carefully balanced for cats of all ages and life stages.

I’ve always believed that pets should be fed as close as possible to their natural diet. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they thrive on a meat based diet and don't metabolise carbohydrates very well. Cats also have a naturally low thirst drive as they originally evolved in desert environments. This means they rely heavily on the moisture in their food to stay hydrated. Feeding a high-quality wet food not only supports hydration but can significantly benefit their overall health. My own cats eat CatChi and I confidently recommend it to my feline patients.

Why This Vet Recommends Fresh Food for Cats

The four single-protein recipes are made with over 95% real meat. They're gently cooked to remove harmful bacteria while preserving important nutrients, then frozen to stay fresh, no preservatives needed.

The team behind CatChi, Matt & Huw, are two passionate cat lovers dedicated to improving feline health, they have ensured that this diet has everything a cat needs and nothing they don’t.

Since switching my own cats to this diet, I’ve noticed a real difference: shinier coats, more energy, and stable, healthy weights.

Diet is so important for a cats health

Diet plays a crucial role in a cat's overall health and well-being. It helps maintain a healthy weight and can significantly lower the risk of certain health conditions that cats are particularly prone to - urinary tract disease, diabetes and obesity.

Why I don't recommend dry food

Dry food (kibble) has never been my first choice for cats. It's low in moisture and high in carbohydrates making it less suited to their biological needs.

Fresh Food for Cats with Allergies or Sensitive Stomachs

I see cats for a variety of conditions but IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) is quite a common one. Symptoms may include, weight loss, vomiting and/or diarrhoea. Skin disease due to food allergy is another medical issue for cats with fish being the most common allergen. Having a single-protein food to now offer is incredibly helpful in these cases — it allows us to rule in or out food as a potential cause and provide a gentler diet for sensitive stomachs.

Can fresh food help with a cats weight management?

Indoor cats are especially prone to weight gain. While exercise is important, it’s also crucial to manage their portion sizes. CatChi is calorie-controlled and portioned to make feeding simple.

Of course, every cat (and every household) is different, there is no one-size-fits-all diet, but CatChi is a fantastic place to start.
